Splat World
Built by VR developer Daniel Skaale, Splat World explores how Gaussian splats can become more than static environments—turning them into interactive, physics-driven elements inside a real-time VR experience.
The World
Created in Unity using environments generated and composed with Marble, the project features two contrasting spaces: a photorealistic house and a vibrant surreal splat dimension.
- Photoreal and abstract worlds built with the same Marble workflow
- Interactive Gaussian splats that react to player movement and collisions
- Real-time lighting, animation, and visual effects driven by splat data
The project demonstrates how splats can function as responsive materials rather than just rendered geometry.
How It Works
Daniel used Marble Composer to generate, edit, and connect environments before bringing them into Unity. He then developed custom C# tools that allow splats to be manipulated in real time.
These systems enable splats to:
- Respond to physics and player interactions
- Animate, dissolve, ripple, and shift dynamically
- Change lighting, density, transparency, and color during gameplay
The experience was developed and tested on Meta Quest 3, including both tethered and standalone VR setups.
Stack
- Marble for environment generation and composition
- Unity for real-time development
- Custom C# tools for splat interaction, animation, and VFX
- Meta Quest 3 for VR testing and deployment
What’s Next
- Larger and more detailed splat-based environments
- Advanced shaders for relighting and destruction effects
- VR and AR experimentation with Marble-generated worlds
- Expanded tools for handling larger splat datasets and faster iteration
Splat World showcases a new approach to worldbuilding where Gaussian splats become active parts of gameplay, not just the scenery.
